There are so many nice things going on the week before Christmas it’s hard to pick one but here’s mine, the Christmas Lights at Temple Square. This isn’t something I normally get excited about but my friend was in town and we were in the mood to be touristy. So close to Christmas this place was packed and freezing and it makes all the difference going with someone who’s not a complainer…seriously nice! We saw lots of families, witnessed a marriage proposal, and took a quick tour of the conference center across the street where the guy was so nice and snuck us out onto the roof quick for this snap shot of the whole scene. What a nice guy, a nice view, and nice company.

This Holiday season I got to spend a lot of time with my friend’s new baby. I met him when he was only two days old and pretty much fell in love the first second I saw him. He is the nicest little thing I think I have ever met, also the smallest/youngest person I have ever met. I was with him for 12 days and heard him cry maybe a handful of times, which in and of itself is quite nice when you are talking about a baby. He also had quite the personality, which he gets about equally from both his parents. I am pretty happy I got to meet this little guy before he gets all grown up and crazy.

Didn’t the term grave yard shift stem from the fact that they dug the graves at night? I pass this graveyard on my way to work every day and this is the second time this week I’ve seen this guy out putting in a cement casket case mid morning. Sort of ominous. And how does one decide to take the job as a grave digger anyhow? It was cold and frosty this morning too and I enjoyed seeing all the Christmas wreaths and decorations on the headstones. Most my grandparents died at Christmas time and it was a nice reminder for me of them. If you ask me I think cemeteries are nice places, not so much sad or scary.
About Sadie’s Picture
This week was pretty crazy. The friends that I rent my place from decided that they needed to remodel and make their main floor one giant room. Part of this remodel that they talked me into helping with, involved digging out a big chunk of the basement to put in a new footing for the 1000 pound steel beam that holds up the top floor in place of the load bearing wall they were taking out. We dug a lot of dirt out from under the house. This new giant hole is where we have decided to bury any bodies we need disposed of. I had a genius idea to take picture of ‘dead bodies’ in the hole, but well, they didn’t look that cool in the end. I decided instead that our 6 feet in the “Pit of Doom” as we started calling it, made a much better photo.

One of my new year’s resolutions was to read a new book by Steinbeck, Vonnegut, Tolstoy, John Muir, and one full book of poetry. I’m done except for John Muir. I’ve picked out My First Summer in the Sierra and it’s so beautiful that I simply can’t rush myself through it and I don’t know that I’ll finish by the end of the year. He just keeps talking about clouds in such amazing ways that it takes me an hour to let one paragraph sink it. Plus it doesn’t help to read quotes like, “One day’s exposure to mountains is better than a cartload of books” and then stay inside reading…
About Sadie’s Picture
This week I am learning how to change brake pads. My brakes need to be fixed and I like to do things myself, and I also can’t afford to pay someone else do it. So this week I have been reading a Chilton’s manual on my car and learning how it’s brake system works. It’s definitely interesting reading and a bit intimidating, but I think it is doable. I have decided to put it off for a couple weeks because I am going out of town for the holidays so I won’t be using my car. We will see in January if I can mange this one on my own.

This reminded me of one of my earliest school memories, a kindergarten assignment where we had to draw as many things as we could think of that were red. I found myself driving around noticing everything that was red. Fire hydrants, cars, apples, a highway of heavy traffic at night, stop signs…but the search was over when my eyes rested upon my beloved long johns hanging on the hook behind my bathroom door. (Yes, they have a trap door in the back)
About Sadie’s Picture
I thought of quite a few things for my red picture, but then Friday evening I found myself sitting in traffic in downtown Bellevue, literally shaking with anger, while staring a long sting of red taillights backed up at a seemingly endless road full of red light after red light. My anger subsided slightly when I decided this was my perfect “red” photo.
